Manage and Solve Your Back Pain
You were injured. You worked on it. It got better. Or maybe it never quite went away. Now your back is nagging at you and sidelining you from the things you like to do. Does your back feel stiff when you wake up or does it wake you at night with a sore ache? Does it grab and hurt painfully when you reach for something? Is back pain limiting your physical activity and now become your constant companion? At Well Effect™, our “Resolve Injuries Now” program is based on our unique, comprehensive, Soma Science℠ approach that has helped every type of person we have worked with resolve or greatly improve their back pain.
There are three categories of injury severity (hover over them for definitions) and they typically move from one phase to the next in this order:
- Acute injuries:
- Sub-acute injuries:
- Chronic injuries:
CHRONIC IS COMMON
Chronic back pain affects a huge number of people. Between 60 and 80% of the adult US population has low back pain. 13 million people go to the doctor each year. Low back problems affect the spine’s flexibility, stability, and strength, and can cause pain, discomfort, and stiffness. Back pain is the leading cause of disability in people under 45 years old.
LOW BACK PAIN CAUSES
Back pain ranges from a dull, constant ache to a sharp, sudden pain that makes it hard to move. It can start quickly with a fall or lifting something heavy and when very painful you will seek treatment because the pain can’t be ignored. If it is dull and achy, it is easier to ignore but it can worsen slowly. It’s important to not ignore low-level nagging back pain and solve the problem with our effective Soma Science℠ approach, as soon as possible. Even if it has been something you have lived with for years, our Soma Science℠ approach will make a difference.
POSTURE AND ALIGNMENT
Sleeping, sitting and standing posture can be a big reason you get and continue to have back pain. Workplace sitting positions or repetitive movements can have a negative impact that weakens the structures over time. Then an injury like a sprain, fracture, accident, or a fall can create an episode of acute back pain. The injury along with the back structures having been weakened creates the perfect situation for the pain to linger. Our “Ergonomics and You” consultation service can provide an individualized solution after we carefully evaluate your standing, sitting and sleeping position at work, at home, and in your car to avoid weakening the system.
Whether from an injury or from workplace or occupational activities, most back pain, falls into these common structural problems:
- Disk Injury or Rupture
- Postural misalignment
- Muscle Spasm
- Tense muscles from stress
- Long standing injury that creates muscle weakness
Additionally, back pain can also occur with some conditions and diseases and can also be caused by infections, or tumors. This requires a doctor’s involvement for proper treatment.
FACTORS IN RECOVERY
Conditioning Level and Age
Our Soma Science℠ approach will keep your back and core muscles strong and teach you proper posture. This will help prevent most episodes of back pain from reoccurring We also teach you how to practice good mechanics and strengthen your whole body, so that when lifting heavy objects you can do so in a way that won’t strain your back. Even if you re-injure your back, our clients tell us that the knowledge that they acquired with our Soma Science℠ approach made them feel in control and able to get past the issue with minimal interruption to their life.
Keep in mind, when considering back pain care, that recovering from an injury becomes much harder if you are out of shape and the tissue is already weakened. If you have a nagging injury, remember that age and conditioning level plays a very important role in the repair process. When it comes to back pain, restore your full function and have a sustained period of lack of symptoms to determine when you can return to normal activity. A slow and methodical ramp up of recreational and performance activities is a smart approach for a safe next step.
Bracing or Rest is not a Solution
We often see people wearing a back brace or lumbar wrap. Many unfortunately end up using them constantly, as if they are stuck in a revolving door. This cycle starts with good intentions. Someone complains of minor pain to his or her back, and their Doctor, suggests a brace or wrap to help rest/support the back. What people don’t realize when faced with back pain is that the brace serves a limited purpose, but the problem is, the brace will also mask the real issue and is not a long-term solution.
The injured tissues need time to heal and this is best achieved with our Soma Science℠ approach that guides you with proper stretching, strengthening and alignment with other structures to re-establish their optimal function. When clients learn our comprehensive Soma Science℠ approach to back pain, they find no benefit in the use of a brace or wrap.
Options to get better
When it comes to resolving back pain, our Soma Science℠ approach is different – we encourage movement and appropriate activity and we have had great success. In the past, and even today, you may have tried or been sent by your doctor to bed for rest. We have found that our specialized and appropriate core strengthening and stretching exercises are a great way to eliminate back pain and stay active.
We suggest walking to help keep the muscles and joints of the spine mobile and invigorated while dissipating irritation and muscle stiffness. We teach you an upright posture with a butt that sticks out (visualize a 3 year old walking), while naturally swinging the arms to help calm back irritation. Stretching the hips and knees is important, as these often play a role in back pain. Using the principles you will learn with our Soma Science℠ approach to back pain, you will learn that you should avoid any form of plank exercise; certain yoga poses that put you into flexion or sit-ups, as these can tighten the hips and increase flexion stresses to the lower back, which is a big part of the problem.
