Hucksters are certain that what they are selling is all you need. Unfortunately, none of this is science. No matter how much something looks high tech or is “connected to a computer” it doesn’t prove anything. Maybe they have placebo effect and actually achieve a decrease in total calories you consume. . . but science? And then what do you do. . . keep buying their product? Yikes!. Only when you change the underlying behaviors, and follow a balanced, sustainable approach, will you succeed with weight loss!
The reality is that the average American women now weighs 166.2 lbs, about what the average American man weighed 40 years ago. Over that same time period the average American man gained 30 pounds going from 166.3 to 195.5 pounds today. In our experience, most people gain weight slowly by taking in only 75 to 150 calories more per day than they need. Your weight did not go up overnight (unless you had a metabolic disease) and it won’t come off in a sustainable fashion overnight either. Since 1993 we have know how to change the course of disease and death in the United States. The prestigious Journal of the American Medical Society or JAMA published a research article “Actual causes of Death in the United States”. What the researchers did, is look at death certificates that list the result and effects of disease that caused premature death Mistakenly listed as the cause of death, in reality it is a symptom of the actual cause. The symptoms listed that caused death were: heart failure, cancer, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, etc.! The researchers found 10 factors that accounted for the cause of all the deaths and fully 80% of the deaths were caused by the top three things; Tobacco, Dietary Pattern, and Physical Activity,
In 1993 we knew what could minimize premature death and disease by controlling these three things. And now over time more and more studies have confirmed. In 2009 CDC researchers released a study “Healthy Living is the best revenge”. The researchers studied 23,000 people and they found that by following 4 simple steps, 1) don’t smoke, 2) routinely eat fruits, whole grains and vegetables, 3) be physically active and 4) have a healthy weight, you would have an 80% less chance of chronic disease, heart disease, diabetes, Stroke, diabetes, dementia, etc than people who didn’t.
This is not about being fanatical or perfection….
For weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie. The body creates a differential response; a differential disposition of calories with the body’s insulin response, to the type of calories you ingest. A big part of whether it is stored as fat or actually burned as fuel is how fast your body absorbs the food. Eat sugar, goes to inflammation and stored as fat in your waist. Eat lean protein, high quality fats, and complex carbs, and your body absorbs it slowly and uses it to fuel your muscles and brain.
Paleo is not about eating today’s meats and fats unless you get meat that is grass fed or wild to create a diet of lean meat and fish. Today’s grain fed beef cattle can have as much as 35% of its calories from fat and mostly saturated with no beneficial omega 3 fatty acids compared to the meat from a wild antelope where it is less than 10% fat almost no saturated fat and loaded with omega 3 fatty acids! Very different! So a pile of pastrami for weight loss is not eating Paleo!
